چکیده

The Baringo-Tugen Hills-Barsemoi 2013 drillcore (BTB13), acquired as part of the Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project, recovered 228 m fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary rocks tuffs spanning a ~3.29–2.56 Ma interval highly fossiliferous hominin-bearing Chemeron Formation, Tugen Hills, Kenya. Here we present Bayesian stratigraphic age model for core employing chronostratigraphic control points derived from 40Ar/39Ar dating outcrop, calibration related outcrop diatomaceous units, magnetostratigraphy. reveals three main intervals with distinct sediment accumulation rates: an early rapid phase 3.2–2.9 Ma; relatively slow 2.9–2.7 highest rate 2.7–2.6 Ma. correspond to periods high Earth orbital eccentricity, whereas corresponds low eccentricity at Ma, suggesting that astronomically mediated climate processes may be responsible observed changes in rate. Lacustrine transgression-regression events, delineated using sequence stratigraphy, dominantly operate on precession scale, particularly within periods. A set erosively based fluvial conglomerates interval, which could either depositional response or development unconformities due local tectonic activity. Age magnetic susceptibility gamma density logs indicates close temporal correspondence between shift high- low-frequency signal variability ~3 approximately coincident end mid-Piacenzian Warm Period, beginning cooling world leading initiation Northern Hemispheric glaciation c. 2.7 BTB13 Baringo Basin records thus provide evidence connection high-latitude equatorial terrestrial toward Pliocene.

Stratigraphy, age and environments of the late Miocene Mpesida Beds, Tugen Hills, Kenya.

Interpretations of faunal assemblages from the late Miocene Mpesida Beds in the Tugen Hills of the Central Kenyan Rift Valley have figured prominently in discussions of faunal turnover and establishment of the modern East African communities. These faunal changes have important implications for the divergence of the human lineage from the African apes ca. 8-5 Ma. While fossil material recovered...

Sequence Stratigraphy

Sequence stratigraphy is the study of sediments and sedimentary rocks in terms of repetitively arranged facies and associated stratal geometry (Vail 1987; Van Wagoner et al 1988, 1990; Christie-Blick 1991). It is a technique that can be traced back to the work of Sloss et al (1949), Sloss (1950, 1963), and Wheeler (1958) on interregional unconformities of the North American craton, but it becam...

New cercopithecoids and a hominoid from 12.5 Ma in the Tugen Hills succession, Kenya.

The early evolutionary history of the cercopithecoids is poorly understood, primarily due to a lack of fossil material from between 15 and about 9 Ma. Cercopithecoid primate specimens from a fossil site in the Ngorora Formation of the Tugen Hills, Kenya, belong to the genus Victoriapithecus, possibly a new species. These fossils are associated with a hominoid specimen that resembles Proconsul, ...

Geology and geochronology of the middle Miocene Kipsaramon site complex, Muruyur Beds, Tugen Hills, Kenya.

The Muruyur Beds are a substantial sedimentary deposit within a middle Miocene sequence of mafic volcanic flows associated with early stages of rifting in the central Kenyan Rift Valley. They are best represented in the Muruyur region, near Bartabwa, north of Kipsaramon, where dates range from 16.0 to 13.4 Ma. At Kipsaramon, located about 10 km south of Muruyur along the crest of the Tugen Hill...
